How Specialist Dietitians Support Children with Complex Dietary Needs

by | Jun 17, 2026 | Blog

When a child is diagnosed with a food allergy, intolerance, gastrointestinal condition, or inflammatory bowel disease, families are often left with more questions than answers.

What foods are safe?
Will my child get enough nutrients?
How do we manage school lunches and birthday parties?
What happens if they already have a limited diet?

At Nourish Therapy, our specialist paediatric dietitians work alongside families to answer these questions and develop practical, sustainable nutrition plans that support both health and quality of life.

Our Dietitian’s can support:

Food Allergies

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a specific food protein. Common allergens include milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.

Food Intolerances

Unlike allergies, food intolerances do not involve the immune system but can still cause significant symptoms.

Children with intolerances may experience gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or other symptoms that impact their quality of life.

FPIES (Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome)

FPIES is a non-IgE mediated food allergy that primarily affects infants and young children.

Because reactions can be delayed and symptoms may be difficult to recognise, families often experience significant anxiety around feeding.

Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten consumption.

Following a strict gluten-free diet is essential for long-term health, growth, and symptom management.

Our dietitians help families:

  • Understand gluten-free eating
  • Identify hidden sources of gluten
  • Maintain nutritional adequacy
  • Support children through dietary changes
  • Build confidence managing coeliac disease at home, school, and in social settings

FODMAP Support

Some children experience ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms that may benefit from specialised dietary assessment and support.

A low FODMAP approach can sometimes be recommended under dietitian supervision for selected children experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive gas
  • Altered bowel habits

Because FODMAP restriction is not intended as a long-term diet, professional guidance is essential to ensure nutritional adequacy and appropriate food reintroduction.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Conditions such as Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis can significantly impact nutrition, growth, and quality of life.

Children with IBD may experience:

  • Reduced appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Growth concerns
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Increased nutritional requirements

Feeding challenges and dietary restrictions often go hand-in-hand. Many children managing allergies, intolerances, gastrointestinal conditions, or chronic illness also experience feeding challenges. Some children become anxious around food due to previous reactions or symptoms. Others develop highly restricted diets because they associate food with discomfort.

This is where our multidisciplinary approach can make a difference.

At Nourish Therapy, our dietitians work alongside occupational therapists and psychologists when required to support not only what a child eats, but also how they experience food and mealtimes.
