Building Stability and Success with Mealtime Routines

by | Jul 7, 2024 | Blog

Routines play an important part in our lives, providing structure, stability, and a sense of control. Let’s explore why routines are so important and how they can positively impact various aspects of our lives.

A regular feeding schedule ensures that children receive balanced and nutritious meals throughout the day. Consistent meal times help regulate their appetite and prevent over or undereating. By offering meals and snacks at the same time each day, you can ensure that your child gets the necessary nutrients for optimal growth and development. Predictable mealtimes can also create a calm and stress-free environment for everyone. Children are less likely to become irritable or anxious about food and a routine helps eliminate power struggles, encouraging positive eating behaviour.

Children can learn to associate certain times of the day with eating, this can help regulate their hunger and fullness cues and provide a sense of stability and predictability. Regular meal times can also help regulate digestion and sleep patterns, eating at consistent intervals help in the function of the digestive system, preventing issues such as constipation or indigestion.

On top of this, it is also helpful to have a routine leading up to meal time, using visuals can help children understand what is expected of them, provide clear directions of the routine, helping to reduce uncertainty and anxiety. Children often understand pictures better than verbal instructions, using a visual schedule can make it easier for them to grasp what comes next, improving their ability to follow routines independently. Other benefits of using visuals are that they support memory, reduces resistance, encourages cooperation, and facilitates communication.
